In terms of flavor, when first taken out of the refrigerator it presents a crisp and refreshing profile. A gentle honey-like sweetness can be perceived, accompanied by a clean finish and refreshing acidity, creating a youthful new-sake style with a subtle sweet-and-sour impression. When served chilled, it is light and easy to drink, even giving a wine-like impression that is very approachable for those new to sake. However, to experience the full charm of this sake, it is recommended to enjoy it closer to room temperature, where the richer layers and umami characteristic of traditional Japanese sake become more apparent.

In addition, this sake is well suited for appreciating the changes brought by aeration. Immediately after opening, the lively freshness of new sake can be felt, while with time and exposure to air the body gradually becomes fuller and rounder, revealing different stages of flavor development. Tasting it side by side with “Tamagawa Tezukezugenshu,” which is bottled without any adjustment, further highlights the subtle and intriguing differences between the two.

Much like the popular “fukubukuro” lucky bags sold during New Year sales at Japanese department stores, Tamagawa Brewery releases this surprise-filled limited sake at the end of each year. A fukubukuro symbolizes the excitement of “not knowing what is inside until it is opened, but knowing it will certainly be worth the value,” and this sake is named with that concept in mind. In the brewing world, there is a saying that “the toji is a first-year brewer every year.” Even an experienced master brewer feels a sense of uncertainty and anticipation when brewing the first new sake of the season. The brewery compares this mixture of nervousness and excitement to the moment of opening a fukubukuro. Beyond its symbolic meaning, the price also reflects the “lucky bag” concept—while the 720ml bottle is sold for only 1,815 yen, sake of the same specification under other names usually sells for over 2,300 yen, making it a truly great-value limited release.
